Moroccan wins Iran’s Holocaust cartoon contest

A MOROCCAN won first prize today in Iran’s International Holocaust Cartoons Contest, which had sparked outrage in Israel, the West and among Jewish groups.

Iran’s best-selling newspaper, Hamshahri, launched a competition in February to find the best cartoon about the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were killed by the Nazis.

The contest was a retaliation for last year’s publication of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad in Danish and other European newspapers that angered Muslims worldwide.

Presenting a prize to a representative of Moroccan cartoonist Abdellah Derkaoui, Culture and Islamic Guidance Minister Mohammad Hossein Saffar-Harandi praised Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who has described the Holocaust as a “myth”…

You can view the other winning cartoon entries here. (You may have to reload the page a time or two.)

My comment: The Holocaust was real, and it’s amazing that we still need to “debate” that fact. Some of these cartoons are actually quite good artistically. The most popular theme seems to have been the current treatment of the Palestinians.

I found this cartoon most powerful, though it only received Honorable Mention:

If you set aside the fact that these cartoons are inherintly racist and completely incorrect, I have to admit that the winner is incredible (while trying not to think about my great-grandparents and relatives that were killed during the Holocaust).

I hope these people are putting their talents to good use as well…

It’s worth noting that, unlike President Ahmadinejad, most of the cartoonists don’t dispute that the Holocaust did actually occur. That’s progress. I guess.

Well, we whether it happened or not, we must realize that the international community has comdemned this act of “freedom of speech” if not called it stupid and outrageous. I wonder where was this community when the cartoon of the prophet Mohamed were published. Were they sleeping? Or were they just closing their eyes pretending that it’s nothing because, after all, it’s against Islam and Muslims?

Thanks for the wonderful page : )

Well, Abe, “the international community” sleeps a lot, I’ve noticed. And when it does awaken, it’s not always worth all that much. ;-)

The mythical holocaust is the faux pal one.Time for those Arabs to return to their actual countries of origin. But they cannot, their home countries will put them in “refugee camps”.
So now we have all this myth grown up around people who just need to go home.
