Iran: Iranian women are not passive victims
March 16, 2007
Homeyra has excerpted a very interesting interview with Fatemeh Keshavarz.
There’s also a comparison of the cover photo from the book Reading Lolita in Tehran, and the original uncropped photo. Two very different messages!

Good article, thanks for linking to it! And you’re right about the covers – I hadn’t seen the original photo from the cover of that book prior to now!
I do think, though, that Azar Nafisi was treated somewhat unfairly by the journalist – she IS Iranian and suffered through all sorts of degrading treatment; her perspective is not that of an orientalist- it is one perspective allowed by someone on the inside (and there are of course, many other perspectives).
I just think it’s unfair for her to criticize Nafisi for not including all aspects of Iranian society – she was writing about her perspective – not about all of Iranian society – and given the harsh treatment she suffered through from the Iranian police, I think her perspective is fair (I really hope you read the book – I’ll feel so stupid for babbling!)
If I were to write a book about my feelings on the American government and were to leave out all of the wonderful things about America, would that be so unfair?

Haven’t read the book. But it’s on my ever-growing list of 200+ books I intend to read — some day!
